The Official AeRo Newbie Guide

Welcome to Aeterna Roma!

Before you get started creating a character, let me give a little history behind the site: Aeterna Roma began in April of 2008, the idea of creators Kate (who has since left us) and Gothic. Only a handful of members (only 3-4 that I can think of) have stuck with the site since its founding, but since the founding we have managed to continue attracting new writers to join in on the fun.

Along with realtime, AeRo has continued the same storyline, with in-game developments starting in 51 AD and continuing up until the present. Some characters have aged and gained themselves a place in the world of Roma, some have retired into history, and others have died the victims of war or political maneuvering. Within AeRo, there is a place for everyone.

Before we get much further, let me introduce the Staff:

Now, with all of that out of the way, the following will evolve in a series of steps to help you create a character and prepare for the time of your life with the rest of us here on Aeterna Roma.

Step 1: Read the site Rules.

Step 2: Read our F.A.Q.

Step 3: Create an account by Registering.

When registering, your username can be whatever you'd like. If you already know the name of your character, use that. If you're unsure of your character's name, use your name/alias. Usernames can be easily changed after deciding what kind of character to make.

Now you are ready to decide what kind of character to make.

Step 4: Decide whether to create an original character, or take on a canon/adoptable.

Should you decide to create an original character, skip to Step 5. If you want to take on a canon/adoptable, skip to Step 6.

Step 5: Custom Character Creation Read the below steps.

• When creating a custom character, the first thing you need is a name. Please see the thread, Roman Naming Conventions.
  • While deciding upon a name, keep in mind that depending on the status of your character the name will be different. Please read over the thread Roman Social Classes to get a good understanding of the social classes of Ancient Rome and AeRo.
• Once you have decided your character's Name and Social Class, the next thing to do is fill out the Joining Application where you will fill in all the details that will give a sturdy skeleton to your character.
  • While filling out your Joining Application, it is important that you understand the history of AeRo before you joined. The best way to get plots and truly develop your character is to place them into the history of the site as best you can. Refer to the INFORMATION DIRECTORY thread to get a good idea of the options for your character.

Step 6: Taking a Canon or Adoptable: Read below for more information.

• If you are taking an Adoptable (a character created by another member) please contact the creator of the character to hammer out the details.
• If you are taking a Canon character, consult the INFORMATION DIRECTORY, and the Admins to ensure the character meets the requirements.

Step 7: Submit your Joining Application. After submission, you must wait for Staff approval before you can begin to plot with other members/characters. We typically reply the same day or the next day, so the wait is not long .

Should a Staff member point out something that needs to be changed, please comply with their request. If it is something serious, send a PM to that Staff member rather than discussing it within the posted thread for the Application.

Step 8: You have a character! You have a lot of options now, first of which should be checking out the Seeking Plots board/thread where you can post a thread seeking plots for your character, and also look over threads others have posted.

Likewise, the cbox tends to be a congregation place for new and current members alike. Announce yourself as new and you'll be welcomed right away!

Step 9: We suggest you read through some other things on the site to get a good feel of everything we have to offer, and then you're one of us!
