It was Only a Favor [Julia Valeria]
#21
Julia possessed a listening ear, and when she chose to speak, it was with gentle understanding. Marcus delayed in his own response, reflecting on the truth of what she said. He knew her history, as marred as his own. As he could no longer hope to profit from his career and earn some land by it, she could never hope to secure an advantageous marriage, her years in slavery having stolen her youthful fertility, and her brother’s ruined name chasing off any hoped for suitors. They each had been dealt a heavy hand.

Something in his expression softened with this knowledge, yet his logic was not less any matter-of-fact than usual. “There is little use in wishing; the gods will what they will.” His statement had a tone of finality to it, and he lifted his cup to take a drink to punctuate that note. After lowering it, his eyes lifted to Julia. There was little she or he could do to change the outcome, but for what it was worth, he was grateful for her company.
