The day looked promising; Gnaeus had just been chosen as Consul a few weeks before and after sorting out a few business affairs he had he was looking forward to a relaxing day at the races. He had also placed a bet with a young senator over the results of the day's third race. He was a well known Whites supporter and had jumped at the chance of placing a bet on a young, promising driver he had helped acquire. The young man had won a few races out East and he was to make his debut in Rome today. Gnaeus had a great interest in chariot racing; though he enjoyed the thrill of the actual races; it was the gambling aspect that kept him a faithful patron of the Circus.

Before the first race began Gnaeus took some time to mingle with a few of the other spectators. There were a few notable men in attendance, there was Lucius Vatinius Donatus, a promising young man fresh from his tribuneship in the Dacian frontier and of course Marcus Tadius Florianus, a man who has recently begun to catch the eye of many in the Senate for his excellent oratory skills. If Gnaeus played his cards right perhaps he could entice a few more Senators into siding with Caesariani, with Marcus in Dacia and Scipio and Acuelo left to lead the opposition, Gnaeus could do with a few more allies in the Senate. Though their numbers were in the Senate were great, Antonius also had his hooks in a few of the influential members of the faction and it was no secret that the two men didn't trust each other. Antonius had essentially purchased his position and though he appeared to be loyal to Marcus men who operate in that manner are never to be trusted.

It was indeed looking to be a good day, with good company, a sure bet, and an exciting race what could possibly go wrong...

Early January 59 AD

The rain that had fallen during the night had left moist traces in the air, and the streets of the city were in spots covered with water. Yet this day did not seem willing to let the rain fall, for the grey clouds moved in an unsatisfied way, as if they did not know what to do or where to go.
A similar feeling was harboured by Proconsul Gaius Cassius Longinus, anxiously walking around in his magnificent domus upon the Palatium hill. Activity bubbled within the house, slaves running here and there carrying things, packing things in coffins and performing the normal household duties.

A few days ago Gaius’ life took a quite unexpected turn, for he had been appointed Proconsul of Syria. In his youth he had actually served in the army in Syria, so he was not totally unfamiliar with the region. However the situation in the area was indeed grave for riots and rebellion flourished in Judea, and the Parthian Empire was continuously on the move, so one could say the situation was a delicate one.
Naturally Gaius was anxious thinking of all these things, in addition to all that he had to arrange before leaving the capital city itself, with his school and his senatorial office not to mention all of his estates! He was so grateful he had his beloved and loyal wife in this very moment. His two sisters had also promised to help him to the farthest possible degree.

And so after great pressure from his wife and his sisters, he was convinced to do something he would not normally dream of doing in a situation like the one he found himself in presently, namely attending the theatre. His loved ones argued that some relaxation would do him good, and finally he gave way to their firm opinion. And so he found himself lying in a sedan chair on the way to the Theatre of Pompey where the performance would be held. According to his youngest sister Cassia they were giving Oedipus Rex by Sophocles, perhaps not the most cheerful play, but if Gaius remembered correctly, it was well-written and hopefully the actors were decent.

Soon enough they arrived and got out of the sedans, the theatre was indeed a grand building, a testament of good old roman architecture and craftsmanship. In a minute they found themselves having taken a seat in the box reserved for the higher society. The theatre was half-full, with people arriving constantly. Gaius estimated that it would not be full, but still it was surprising that so many people attended considering the uncertain weather. During the period of waiting for the play to start they were served a cup of heated wine which was very fitting considering the weather. Gaius could not see many of his colleagues, well not many he was close to anyway. He had to confess he was a little disappointed with that fact, attending the theatre was as much a social as a cultural experience.

I am back and I am hoping to get some plotting going as well as threads.
A lot of my characters have been laying dormant, but I have hopes that it doesn't last.

There are plans of updates for several of my characters but looking to thread with whomever. =) PM or reply.

~ Freddie, will be a free woman, her abusive husband got a sword to the thigh severing his femoral. Or maybe he just got his stomach slashed and his guts revealed to him.

~Demetria, needs some money in a major way, and is considering the life of a criminal

~Junia, hoping to meet some more of the Caesar's family, and perhaps a good meeting, (could be bad) before her union with Junus.

~Iris, whatever makes sense? XD

~Mettia, still hoping for a husband that she can stand or even one she cannot, but at least it would be her decision to marry, due to her papa's greed.
~Achillia and Aphrodite, gladiatrix and gladiatrix trainer -- >.< need more inspiration. Willing to try anything. >.> Teehee...
The Asella family had fallen on very hard times. Demetria's mother was sick, her brother was sort of an idiot, and her father was being worked to the bone. Even with as much help as Demetria has given to her family, selling, producing, it was never enough to clear the debt that had begun to stack as high as the mountains.

They were about to lose everything and she felt as if they all hung on by a thread. Fear is what drove her, and if not that, determination. She had heard stories. Rumors and the like but desperation made her bold as she decided to see if she could discover it for herself.

Were there other ways except the honest ways to make a living? She needed money fast and being the creative person that she was, Demetria decided to see if the rumors were true. She was hoping to get a job, not as a prostitute, but perhaps a pick pocket, a thief, or even a forger? High hopes happen to squash the healthy amount of doubt that tried to rear its head as she took in the sight of the Domus Venus.

It was not the first time she had been here, but she had recalled how the other time had went and all of the awkward stares of the people that were found within. If not the customers, the workers of the pleasure house.

Once again she strolled in and looked about to see if she could perhaps this time find the owner of the place, or at least be steered in the right direction. Before venturing too far inside, she took a deep cleansing breath to hold that nerve that was a lot smaller than when she left her home.

Her steps were steady, but unsure. She crept into the darker place allowing her eyes to adjust and stood there awkwardly sticking out like a sore thumb looking for someone that might look as if he or she owned the place.

GENERAL PERSONALITY:

Aeron will always appear as a very nice guy with an outgoing personality. He greets everyone with a smile if he can, and he prefers to accompany that smile with a touch. Aeron is indeed a very touchy-feely kind of person, and he often has troubles keeping his hands off other people. He likes intimacy, even when it’s just with friends, and more than one woman has misinterpreted this and thought he wanted them. But he just wants to sit close and hold those he likes close to him too. This can annoy some, and people who don’t like to be touched may have problems with Aeron.

He has a tendency to instantly like most people he meets – Aeron believes in the good in people and won’t trust that you say someone’s bad before he has experienced it himself. You have to try really hard to get him to dislike you. He’s very playful and hyper and can seem to be ‘all over the place’ to some – if he had been born a few thousand years later, he would have been diagnose ADHD. He almost can’t sit still, he likes to be on the move and he likes to talk. He can smile sweetly and he has this certain winning and almost superior smile that many adore; and he will make sure though that you know, that he’s a lover and not a fighter. Aeron dislikes violence and war greatly, and he’d much rather do something else than end up in a fight.

There is of course a dark side to everything – even to Aeron. He tries to never show it to anyone, because Aeron wants to be seen as happy, cheerful and funloving. He wants to be that way too. He wants to stay positive and optimistic. But behind this bouncy image, there’s a lonely and insecure soul. When he’s out and among people, he feels great – but when he’s home and alone, he has a tendency to feel really alone and sad. He dislikes to be alone, and he dislikes showing that he hates that because that would be seen as weak. And he know he gained his name because they wanted him to be strong, and this makes him feel weak. Aeron fears showing his weakness. When he loses someone he likes, whether they leave him or they die, he barely takes time to mourn – he’ll keep himself going and try to not allow himself to feel sad, because he hates that feeling. He will seek out company and attention, and if you turn him down, he probably won’t understand it in the first round. He can seem very tactless, but this is simply because he does not always know when and where to stop. He wouldn’t like to hurt someone on purpose, but he can do it anyway, without knowing it.

-----------------------------------------------------
APPEARANCE
-----------------------------------------------------

EYES: Blue
BUILD: Average
HEIGHT: 5’7”
STYLE OF DRESS: Aeron most often wears a dark grey tunic with blue bands along the edges of the sleeves, the neck and the hem. Along with the tunic he always wears light grey breeches that go to just below the knee. He also has a fine pair of sandals but also enjoys walking on bare feet. On really warm days, he won’t even wear his tunic, but simply the breeches. Aeron also likes to wear jewelry, and owns a few rings and armbands. He also has a fur coat, almost like a waistcoat, that he’s brought with him from Britannia, and he likes to wear this on colder days or when he wants to stand more out and show where he’s from.

GENERAL APPEARANCE:

Aeron has short, black hair that is usually allowed to land as it pleases after he’s rinsed it. His skin appears pale but slightly sunkissed - yet he does not stand a lot of sunshine, for his skin will burn and turn red. He prefers to keep to the shadows because of this, even if he loves the sun. Aeron is fairly tall and because of whom he is and how he acts, he’s often easy to find in a crowd. He also likes to wear black on his eyes and red on his lips, something he has learned from Egyptian acquaintances he’s met in Rome. He feels this makes him stand out even more, and he does like attention, after all.
BIOGRAPHY:

In the western Britannia, in the area today known as Wales, several tribes lived. One of these tribes was known to the Romans as the Demetae, and it was into this tribe that Aeron was born in the year 34 AD. He was named after their river- and warrior-goddess Agrona, with the hopes that the boy would grow as strong as his name. Aeron was the third son to the king, named Grannus, and so he did not grow up with a lot of expectations to his future; even if he easy could have, for it turned out that he was the son that was most like his father. His big brother Gavin was fiercer, and his other brother, Alan, also seemed to grow larger and stronger than Aeron did. Of course there were hopes of his strength and how he would be able to fight if there were conflicts with other tribes… but Aeron was mostly allowed to do whatever he pleased, as long as he honored his father and his tribe. As a child, he had the tendency to spend more time with his little sister, Keelin, than with his brothers. They just seemed to get along better, and he’d often be the one who took care of her when the adults couldn’t. Aeron adored his little sister. Meanwhile their tribe did try to live mostly in peace, preferring trade and conversation over plunder and conflict. Aeron’s father preferred peace and to not lose any men. Sadly he wasn’t always able to keep this peaceful life for his tribe though – for to the east, the tribe known as the Silures lived. And they were much fiercer than the Demetae.

It was far from the first time in his life it happened, but when Aeron was 14 years old, the Silures raided a few Demetae towns and threatened Aeron’s father. Aeron’s father gathered a lot of men, including the young Aeron, and rode against the Silures to try and stop the fights, the killing, the plundering and the rapes. It wasn’t all that easy, a peaceful tribe against a more aggressive tribe. It was a wonder the Silures did not claim the Demetae to be a part of the Silures. Yet they allowed them to stay their own tribe, and after a lot of negotiations, they all decided to return to peace. Not a lot of people looked up to Aeron’s father for doing that, since by other tribes, this was seen as a sign of weakness, but as far as Aeron knew, this meant his people would survive – he believed that his father did the right thing. The Silures demanded a pledge from the Demetae though… they wanted security from the tribe. They wanted a person of rank as a pledge. In the end it was decided that Aeron would be the security; he was given to the Silures to keep the peace between their tribes, and if the peace was broken by the Demetae… Aeron would be killed.

And so it came to be, that Aeron sat on a horse and was sent to live with a noble Silurian family who lived far from the Demeate, towards the east of the Silurian lands. As he rode on his way, he was naturally flanked by Silurian soldiers. Aeron was quiet to begin with, not sure what to say. He had been told he was to be treated more like a guest than a slave, but he didn’t know if he felt like that. Not with those soldiers. The trip took several days, and each night, Aeron and the men would camp. On the third night, the Silurian man in charge had grown tired of the lack of female company. It wasn’t common and it was never spoke of, when it happened, but he cast his eyes upon the pretty young Aeron. The man took Aeron away from the other men, ripped Aeron’s pants down and took him. Aeron wasn’t a virgin by this point, but he had only penetrated one woman so far. And now a man did the same to him. It was a strange feeling, but despite that he wasn’t entirely willing, Aeron found that he wanted to do it again. The night after, Aeron offered himself to the man, both to make sure he’d be treated well by the man and because he was young and curious. Aeron and the Silurian soldier grew close on the way, and once he had reached his new home, Aeron had no interest in women at all. He wanted only men.

Now this didn’t mean that Aeron disliked women. He could appreciate their beauty and he could see why other men were so attracted to them. He even felt sorry for them, seeing how men often treated them… but despite the fact that he often sided with the women and therefore easily gained female friends, he had no interest in them as lovers. This was never spoken of, for it wasn’t normal to be with men in this tribe. But Aeron did grow close with a slave in the household where he lived, and to make sure Aeron wouldn’t appear weak, the slave would often misbehave and Aeron would take him away to punish him. Of course there wasn’t any punishment going on at all. This wasn’t his only lover, he kept seeing the soldier who took him there too and even managed to seduce a few more too over the years.

Quite a few years later, in the year 57 AD, during the spring, Aeron was still with the Silures. That year, there were rumors of Romans in Britannia and they were at war. Aeron disliked the sound of that; he had never been sent out to fight, as he did not seem interested in it at all. He was treated as a guest by the Silures, although he’d not spent all of his time bedding those of their males that would want him. He enjoyed performing for others, with songs and dancing, and most people enjoyed watching him and his winning smile. Aeron was known as a friendly young man, now 23 years of age and unmarried. It was never spoken out loud, but everyone knew why. When the Romans came to fight against the Silures. Aeron didn’t want to fight; he wanted to remain safe and alive. He had heard before about how the Romans lived in the warm south, and how they were often much more open about who and what they liked sexually… and Aeron decided it might be the best for him if he left Britannia entirely. He dressed himself up in his finest clothes, while the other men put on their battle gear and sat up on their horses. He snuck out and stole a horse… and then he was on his way to find the Romans, so he could give himself to them.

Despite that he’d been treated kindly by the Silures, Aeron knew they weren’t his people and that with the Romans and their war… well, his people might not last long either. He looked out for himself now, and so he left the Silures and even his own people behind. Keeping himself safe was one reason for doing it, but as he rode, he decided he would do something for his father, his family and especially the sister he had not seen in years. Those Romans he found – a few scouts from a larger army – accepted his offer and brought him to the camp. Here he was presented to those in charge, and here he once more knelt and offered himself as a slave. The Romans wondered what his terms were; they didn’t trust him at first. He could be a spy, after all, sent to infiltrate them. But he told his name and told them about the peaceful Demetae with their king Grannus. He told them how the Silures had attacked the Demetae more than once, and they were the reason Aeron was here, because he had been given away as a pledge. Aeron knew his tribe would not want war, and so he gave himself and hoped that the Romans would remember this and not harm his family.

They took the offer. In return for doing that, the Romans gained Aeron. He was sent to Rome to live, and because he had given himself so willingly, he was treated as something like a guest, despite the fact that he was more like a slave – just like before, but he wasn’t chained or told that he had to stay inside one household or even within the walls of Rome. In Rome, he discovered theater and that he had a knack for playing parts in plays and for reciting poetry. On top of that, he still enjoyed to dance. His dark hair and blue eyes often stood out when he performed, and for that he was remembered and known. Aeron has now made it his career, to perform for noble Romans, dressed up as they prefer it. Aeron is now 25 years of age, and has something of a career in Rome. He has not forgotten where he came from, but he really enjoys Rome and the Romans and isn’t really homesick either. He has been given his own home now, which is decorated with interesting colors and mosaics and he will always look for more to do and more people to entertain.

EYES:
BUILD:

February 13, 59 AD
Domus Juventia Geta

“Thank you, for bringing him Marcus.” Naevia's eyes looked up at her former brother in law. Marcus Furius Bibaculus had arrived, bringing her son for one of his weekly visits. He was to stay for two days, but these arrangements were getting tiring on the boy. Naevia knew she'd have to speak with Marcus and Lucius on the matter. She didn't want her son around them. The Furii family were poisonous and vile. The more time Lucius Caecilanus spent around them, the more he was going to turn into Sextus, like the rest of his family. No. Naevia knew her son did not have Furii blood. He had the blood of his father, her late husband. She knew now that she had loved Lucius Caecilius, before he was taken away from her.

Staring at her son's green eyes- the same eyes Lucius had- she couldn't help but be reminded of happier times, when things were so far much more simple than they were now. She only had to worry about the fact that her womb had not quickened with child since she had lost two after Lucius. She remembered the happiness he had felt, to carry a child again and then had it all taken from her. She had wept for so many nights, unable to have another- a beautiful golden haired daughter or even another dark haired boy like her husband. She had spent so much time remembering the past as of late that she had to remind herself she had a new future before her.

Surely more children would follow, if she ever got past her fear. Her body shivered every time she was touched by a man to the point where she wished to vomit. She had gotten used to Gnaeus however. Over their marriage he hadn't pressured her- she had kissed him even at Antonia's party before she realized what she had done and she had begun avoiding him again. Now however as she stared at her beloved son, she could only help but say what she needed to. “Lucius, I need to talk to you.” Naevia began, and the boy nodded.

“Mater there was something I wanted to tell you. Uncle Lucius told me to tell you.” Naevia raised a brow. “Oh? And what would that be?” Already they were putting words in his mouth! “Mater I am sick of having to visit you and then see my Uncles. I want- I want to stay in one home. Always. I want it to be like how it was before my father died.” Naevia smiled at him. Her son understood. Lucius was ten now- he wasn't a child anymore. Soon he would be a man and she'd shudder to think how many hearts of girls he broke.

“I have been meaning to talk with you about that. Your Uncles are not really your Uncles, you know that? They are not related to you by blood. I am.” Naevia started to explain. “And now that I am married again, you can stay here with me. I want you to stay here with me. You will- you are my son. Gnaeus has his own son too you know- you would have a step brother your age, and Octavianus has children of his own- you wouldn't be alone-”

“I don't want to stay here. I want to stay with Uncle Lucius and my cousins. They are more fun and-”

“No, Lucius. I am your mother. You should stay here, away from that family. Do you know what they are like? Well you wouldn't would you. You are far too young- you can visit them still if you'd like but you are going to stay-”

“NO! I don't like it here and I told Uncle Lucius I wanted to stay and he said yes. I am going to live there now. Uncle Lucius said he would tell you but he and Uncle Marcus both agreed I can stay. So I am going to stay.” Lucius was adamant- his voice insistent for one so young.
Naevia's blood had begun to boil. “I will not hear anymore of this nonsense. You are a child Lucius, my child. I mean to talk with Gnaeus so that you will be adopted- as his son. You will be here, with me where you belon-”

“NO! I'M NOT GOING.”

“LUCIUS! Stop it, sweet I am only doing this because I love-”

“NO. YOU TREAT ME LIKE I'M A BABY AND I'M NOT. I'M NOT STAYING. You just want to take me away from them but they love me! They love me more than you ever do! Ever since you married again you haven't paid any attention to me.” Naevia's stomach dropped.

“I love you! Why can you not see that? And me getting married will never change that. You are my son! I carried you, I birthed you. I was the first face you saw when you entered this world. Lucius I am your mother and you belong with me. You don't belong with those men, that family killed your father! You don't understand. Sextus- Sextus had your father killed. That is why-”

“Stop lying to me! They'd said you are saying things about them, bad things. I love them! They are my family to.”

“Lucius, those people are evil. I can't have you around them. I need to protect you.”

“STOP LYING TO ME.” And with that Lucius shoved her away, running out of the room. Naevia stared, dumbstruck. Never had her son openly defied her but now- now it was as she feared. They had poisoned him against her. They had filled his mind with taint, making him hate her. Anger raged within her, but Naevia didn't move. She had lost her son- the only man in the world she truly did love. He was gone.
I would love to get Arri here going. He is the legally recognized illegitimate son of a senator who has recently died. I can't be really creative at the moment, beyond your typical friends, enemies, lovers, fiancees type ideas But I'd love to get some threads going for him. I think at the moment he has one active relative, who is Arruns Naevius Silonius, who is in a few threads at the moment.

If you have any ideas shout them out or PM me. Thanks

February 21, 59 AD

It was the night before the wedding and Tiberius really couldn’t care less. In fact, he wasn’t worried at all. Abelia was a mere woman and she didn’t scare him. What was the worst that could happen anyway? Oh right, he almost forgot that part. He barely had the freedom. But Tiberius wasn’t going to let the trivial marriage rip away all his rights. He was still young and he was still going to drink and fuck as he pleased. Hence, he and Justinus decided to throw a random bash to celebrate his last night of total freedom.

He got fitted in the finest fabric he could find lying in his dresser. The man looked divine but he knew his attire was going to be wrecked by the end of the night. Tiberius apparently had the domus to himself that night, though Lucius still held some authority. His eldest brother was bound to show up at some point that evening. Quintus of course, was going to attend or else Tiberius swore to castrate him. How could Quintus not be present? The man was one of the closest people to Tiberius. He wanted to revel within the moment with him.

Finally done with his appearance, he left the bedroom and headed out the door. Walking down the hall, a small level of thoughts ran through his mind. Tiberius was getting married, him of all people. Why him? He understood that his eldest brother got married at the age fourteen, but it still didn’t answer his question. Age did not matter. Quintus wasn’t married yet. Why couldn’t Tiberius wait a little bit longer? He would have preferred it. Most of his companions mocked him for being wedded. It all felt very bizarre to him. Oh well, marriage couldn’t have been that terrible. He would just have to wait and see for himself.

Tiberius reached the entrance hall and glanced around. The room wasn’t truly decorated. He didn’t put much effort into the bash. There was no use to doing so. The place was probably going to collapse by the end of the night anyway. The wine was set out and the room was occupied by nude women. It was all flawless. He picked up a cup of wine and drank it down, awaiting for his friends to arrive. "Let the games begin." he muttered with a smirk.

GENERAL PERSONALITY:

Lucilla is a woman who is devoted to furthering the cause of her children and ensuring their survival. Given their current position within the Empire, it means they need to succeed in order to survive in the world of Roman politics. She was a strict and somewhat distant mother, the woman was focused on them receiving the best education available to them. It was something the woman prided herself on and found it better to nurture their minds then their hearts. There was moments when this decision causes her to regret the choice that she had made for them and for herself. Darius was the child she was closest to, but once he died, much of her attention turned towards grooming Junus to taking his role as Caesar. Her affection is also towards Livia, her step-daughter along with Flavia, Claudia and Tiberius.

She is a loyal woman, although there has been times when her loyalties and friendships placed her and those around her at risk. The main one being her friendship with the traitor, Camillus. That could have brought shame to her family along with endangering the life of her children. She values the friendships that she has, although there is a bit of sadness because many of those she was friends with as a child are no longer amongst the living. Either being killed through time, the politics of Rome or by their own hand.

Given her position within Rome, she has developed a ruthless and cunning streak. Lucilla would gladly wipe out entire families that wronged her or her family. But she has also shown mercy such as the Junius Silanus family by discarding Claudius' final order to have the family destroyed and protecting Valeria, the sister of Camillus from harm. Her first husband taught her the reality of life for Roman women and has given her a coldness towards that life for women, even for the fate of her own daughters.

Lucilla beneath the cold, exterior of the proper Roman matron is a highly passionate woman. There were times when she wasn't faithful to her husband (when married to Gaius, had an affair with Marcus) and when she was with Claudius, she had an affair with Marcus. Not to mention a strained love affair with Camillus where she was manipulating him for political gain. This doesn't include the female lovers she has taken during her time, it's something she keeps very discreet.

Her relationships with men have been mixed. Her Pater was a man she respected and had a part in his murder to keep the family safe changed her ideals. Her father was no longer a god-like figure of childish admiration, but someone who had to be dealt with for the protection of the family. Lucilla has several close friendships with men of Rome, some of these include/have included Camillius & Damicus, Lucius Cornelius Scipio, Lucius & Marcus Furius Bibaculus.

-----------------------------------------------------
APPEARANCE
-----------------------------------------------------

CELEBRITY CLAIM: Connie Nielson
HAIR: Reddish brown, past her shoulders and curled.
EYES: Green.
BUILD: Curvy
HEIGHT: 5'9 (Quite tall for a Roman woman)
STYLE OF DRESS:
Lucilla's clothing tends to be more more classic and conservative styles of the women of times before, rather then the more modern styles worn by younger women. If she is on official business or receiving guests within the Domus Augustana, she always wears a stola that marks her as a married woman. Lucilla wears expensive, yet smaller and tasteful jewellery pieces to mark her own status and wealth.

General Appearance

Lucilla has the fairer skin of her Northern ancestry. She is quite tall for a Roman woman, her height being taller then most men of the time period. Her posture is upright and she doesn't slouch. Around her eyes, small lines and crows feet have begun to form. Her body is curvy and her legs toned from riding, however age and the amount of births has altered her body. Her stomach is a little stretched and both places have faint stretch-marks.

Lucilla was born into a household where both of her parents were members of the nobility, her father's family had risen while her mother's were of ancient blood. She also had a twin, Julius who would remain a close friend of hers throughout her life. Lucilla was the only surviving female child out of several others who died in the past for the family.

Her childhood was primarily learning how to manage a household, disciplining slaves, learning to read and write in Latin & Greek, along with learning how to behave in proper society. From her Pater, she learned about things when he would discuss military tactics and explained what the different units were. Lucilla eagerly learned anything her father was willing to tell her about it. However, she was never permitted to use weaponry or learn combat itself. Since the family lived outside Rome, it gave Cneaus slightly more freedom and he indulged Lucilla when it came to have her permitted to know how to ride a horse. Lucilla had a more liberal upbringing then many of her peers, some would say it benefited her but others would say that it was negative.

Lucilla was given two slaves of her own by her father. Aulus and Gaulus, Germanic twins who were named and instructed by her. From them she learned how to speak in their language and learned about their culture. It gave her a bit of an understanding about the tribes to the North.

She was not without friends as a child. Her cousins and friends would frequently come to visit. She had a consistent friendship with Camillus, even going as far as to plan their marriage together and they were the very best of friends. There was a young woman called Domitia who was her fondest of friends. When she was eleven, Domitia was sent to Rome to meet with the man who was to become her husband and moved to be with him. Lucilla and her sent letters to each other.

At thirteen years of age she was married to Gaius Livius Cassianus, who was an Imperialist Senator of Rome and a man with great wealth, he was also quite influential. She moved from her home in Gaul to the capital and got acquainted with her new life. The Senator was more of a traditionalist, trying to enforce the stricter gender regulations on his much younger spouse and it led to several arguments between the pair of them. Naturally Lucilla resented this treatment and was disciplined severely by her husband. At this time she become friendly with a young noblewoman close to her own age called Cambria Phisceria in time the pair became the best of friends. Her friendship with Domitia was maintained during this time as well and she met Papiria as well as Clarissa. Who also became her friends within the city. They helped the woman adjust to the change of the city. This is also around the time that the woman meets Seneca for the first time and their friendship began.

There are rumours of her husband plotting against Caligula. The mad Caesar, the woman tried to keep her husband's dislike quiet and not draw attention to the family. Through this period of time, Lucilla learns a great deal about how to manage a household and learn about the politics of Rome and her husband was unwilling to yield to her desire to settle down.

First child

Lucilla completed her obligation to her husband and provided him with a healthy son. Lucius Lucius Cassianus, a boy born into an influential family. The man's hatred of his younger spouse eased during this time, but hers for him did not. She had not forgotten his treatment of her and wrote to her mother to assist her in dealing with him, eventually the pair were determined to bring the man down and end his life. This was kept quiet from her friends and the other members of her family.

It was around this time that she met Marcus Rufus Honorius for the first time at the marketplace with her husband. An unfortunate accident led to the pair meeting each other and later the pair become good friends, then lovers. The youth offered her comfort in her troubled marriage and it raised a dilemma for her about the behaviour. During this time the woman maintained communication with her twin brother Julius and with her friend, Camillus. Although neither of them knew of her feelings towards her husband and how she had plans to rid herself of him. Yet try to keep his family as allies for her family.

Death of Gaius

Spoiler:

Her husband was growing more ambitious for himself and he became more outspoken of Caligula. While Lucilla had no support for the mad Caesar, she was unwilling to go down as a supporter of his and used the poison on him. It mimicked a fever and therefore looked like the illness that would sometimes move through Rome and cost Roman lives. Naturally the woman openly showed signs of grief to the public but inside the woman was pleased with her action. She had tasted blood for the first time.

Although under strange and unexpected circumstances, her son with her first husband also died. For the boy, the woman's tears were genuine and his family were compassionate towards the grieving widow of the paterfamilias. The new Paterfamilias and now the sole heir was kind to the woman, offering her the dowry back along with anything else she wished to take. It is unknown what the relationship was like between the pair of them during this time, except they are on good terms to this day.

Claudius had been dangerously curious about the Livian-Cassian and Flavii-Alexandrone alliance. Therefore it was fortunate that the union had come to an end and Lucilla made an effort to try to spend more time being amicable with the Imperial family to protect her own.

Second Marriage

Spoiler:

The next marriage was arranged with her thoughts considered. However, there was the added bonus of Marcus' family being old and respectable although they weren't powerful enough too be considered to be a threat. Lucilla brought the connection of her family along with the wealth she had received from her first marriage. It was a blissful time for her. The pair enjoyed each other intimately, something the pair had been mostly denied previously and he was sent away to the Rhine to serve under her father's command.

During the early stages of her pregnancy the woman met up with Domitia again and their friendship renewed. Although this time there was a new intimacy, both their husbands were away at war and neither wished to harm their honour with an affair with a man. At a party and nearly resulting in a fight, the woman met with Clarissa for the first time and also met with Papiria who could also become some of her closest friends. During her husband's absence the woman also devoted herself to ensuring the family interests were protected and maintain whilst being in Rome.
Marcus Rufus Honorius (Darius) was born. Although the boy's name was originally one that honoured his father and wasn't the same that later on he became known as. He was her pride and joy. Lucilla was determined that Darius would have a better chance at survival than her other son did in the game of Roman politics. It was also within the first tour of duty that her husband, Marcus went on. During this time she spent time with her Mater, who had been pregnant with Octavius at the time and during their early childhood. The pair had been firm friends with Octavius giving Darius his nickname that he would become known by within his family.

During this period of time the woman extended the friendships associated with her family. Her affair with Domitia stopped during this point when the Gods took her friend passed away from her in childbirth. The woman was deeply upset and mourned her friend. There are still times when the woman would visit the mausoleum to offer her well wishes to her.

Whilst the politics continued, the woman became intimate with Clarissa and became friends with Papiria. Both women who would become close friends of hers as time went by.

Caligula was assassinated and her family backed Claudius in becoming Caesar. However the man was still uncertain of the Flavii-Alexandrones, despite their apparent loyalty and Lucilla spent time with the Imperial family. Especially Valeria Messalina and Gaius.

When her husband returns home, it is a warm meeting between the pair and their passions renewed. Lucilla doesn't take her female lovers into her bed during this time.
Marcus returns earlier in the year and their reunion is pleasant. The woman is pleased with her husband's elevation to becoming a Legatus.

With the rise in position, it meant that her husband went to Judea to deal with the Jews there and they were separated again. This time the woman had three children to care for and to ensure they were educated. In spending more time with the Imperial family, it gives her time to be introduced to Manius Claudius Sabucius, who was the nephew of Caesar. The woman travels to Germania along with her father and meets with Fluvius Aetius Stilicho, a man who would later rise to importance in Rome and soon leaves before the advancing Suebi get too close.

The woman receives word that Camillus sought her hand in marriage and had been denied by her father.
In 51AD Lucilla met with Claudius within the Domus Augustana, of late the man had began to seek her out and speak with her on a regular basis. However the woman was unaware of Claudius' intentions towards her and didn't know that he was asking Marcus. Once the woman did find out, she pushed to be given her own financial independence within his household and permitted to act as she pleased. Claudius at the time needed the alliance of her family and agreed. Little did Lucilla know that he had also been speaking with her husband, Marcus who had been ordered to divorce his wife on the orders of Caesar.

When they informed each other of the intentions of Caesar. The pair broke down and embraced each other for the last time. Marcus was rewarded for his loyalty. Lucilla then married Claudius in a public ceremony and showed friendship towards both Manius and Livia. Her three children were then adopted by Claudius although Manius was his successor.

Uses poison on Caesar, but due to a different plot against him. The man doesn't die but instead goes into a coma and when he awakens, the man has lost his mind. Several families were to be slain, Lucilla halted some of them for reasons unknown.

Manius is declared a traitor and responsible for what happened to Claudius. Therefore he is disinherited and Darius is named as Caesar's official heir. The woman sends messages to her friends in the army and within politics to ensure they would support her son if Caesar happened to die.

However, in a twist of fate and a change of character. Her father began to whisper about taking the Imperial seat, not wishing to have his memory tarnished nor to have the possibility of her family dying. She conspires with her eldest brother Quintus in order to have him discreetly killed, the poison mimicked a fever and her father died. Strangely the same illness also effected her older brother as well...

Quintus recovers and serves as Consul.

56AD Meets Antonia Vitellia and the pair become friends and lovers during this time. They become incredibly close. The woman keeps in contact with Camillus, promising him her hand should he succeed but becomes aware of his intentions towards her son. Instead of shunning these, she encourages Darius to use them to his political advantage.

Claudius is assassinated by a slave within the Domus Augustana. Camillus was in Rome during this time and rumoured to have been seen outside Lucilla's quarters the night that he died.
Darius becomes Caesar, but with conditions. There were to be regencies set up in order to support him before he would take on the position of Caesar. Lucilla assisted him, but her influence was limited due to the fact she is a woman and her son was young. Again the woman used the influence that she had to keep the men in line. Her cousin, Lucius Cornelius Scipio (Later, Dacicus) is Consul and with it power has briefly been restored to the Senate.

In order to prevent a civil war between the different factions within Rome, a quinqueviri was established with the follow men in prominent positions. Camilius in Gaul & Spain, Darius in Italy, Quintus Alexander in Illyria & Greece, Stilicho in Asia, and Manius in Africa.

Both Lucius and Quintus respectively were sent to deal with the Epirot Rebellion and Dacia.

Darius abolishes the regencies and Lucilla works to ensure that he is supported. Both the praetorians and the army (minus Camillus and his supporters) were in favour of the dissolution. His father, Marcus Honorius is selected to become prefect in order to defend his son.

There is an assassination attempt on Darius, causing Marcus to show a darker side of his character and for Lucilla to plot to use it in order to solidify Darius' rule. Despite the shock and terror that she encountered in the process. The revelations that Darius were informed of about Camillus' true intentions shocked him to the core of his being. Lucilla knew it was a terrible and yet an important lesson for her son to learn. Camillus was then declared a traitor. Lucilla felt nothing about the order and if Darius did not act, she would have had him assassinated.

During the time of his injury, Fluvius Stilicho acted as his military advisor with Lucilla advising about the state of the city and keeping the Domus Augustana in order. She sent word to ease the troubled Legates, who were fearful in case there was yet another civil war that would grip the Empire. In order to gain the support of various matrons, Lucilla sent word around that she was currently looking for a prospective wife for Darius and then the potential candidates came forward.

Later, Darius' uncle and Lucilla's eldest brother was sent to attack Camillus who was defeated. He managed to escape and the men who had been captured were pardoned by her son.

Her son, guided by the divine Caesars has a premonition that Britannia was to become Roman. There was an attack by British forces on the fortress and prompted Darius to begin the preparation, Lucilla assisted him and was pleased to see her eldest son return to his old vigour. The woman later in the year gave birth to Claudia and Tiberius, the children of Claudius.

Lucilla encouraged Darius to show mercy towards Sextus, the son of the traitor Camillus along with the valued word of Quintus and Fluvius Stilicho.
The campaign in Britannia begins, an event that has brought Rome a great deal of unity that had been lacking in recent years. Darius became the undisputed Caesar, the young man kept in contact with his Mater who knew he would be safe under his father's watchful eye, along with his Uncle Octavius and several others who were trusted with his life.

Whilst Darius was away in Britannia, Lucilla devoted herself to the education of her remaining children and the construction of a library that was being built in her son's honour. A place of great learning that would go with the military conquest. First, Marcus Rufus Honorius returned to Rome and she greeted her former husband fondly. Although neither parent were involved in an affair with each other, instead their focus was on their children and ensuring the power vacuum left after Fluvius Stilicho was slain by pirates didn't spill over. The woman mourned him, as a friend but dealing with the matter was more important and the focus of the majority of her attention. Darius returned amongst great celebration but looks pale and Lucilla asked him what was wrong. Her son had become more independent since his time in Britannia, he brushed off his mother's pestering in order for him to see a physician and ignored what she said about exhausting himself. Caesar, had always been determined to push himself to be the very best that he could be.

The woman meets with Artaxias, the Armenian ambassador for the first time during a banquet when Caesar returned in victory from his campaign. Her heart sank when Darius publicly fainted, with blood from his lips and later that night she prayed to the Gods to protect her son.

He sank into unconsciousness.
During this time, Lucilla, Antonius Ercasius Decimedianus who was Consul at the time and Marcus Rufus Honorius, the prefect of the Praetorian guard. During this unpredictable time, Manius Claudius Sabucius soon died of a fever and it was rumoured that the Imperial family was behind it. But there was no proof.

Lucilla and Marcus become co-rulers of the Empire during this time. Lucilla tending to matters of state and governing (not sitting in the Senate!) while Marcus tended to things involving the military. Although the pair of them often spoke to seek out each other's position before an official decision was to be made.

To her grief, Darius died and passed into the Elysium. He was to join the rest of the other Gods. But it rose a dangerous matter, concerning the will and succession. Junus was younger than Darius had been when he had first become Caesar and Darius' illness had brought instability that was not there before.

It was a dangerous and uncertain night. Lucilla had discreetly worked on contingency plans in case the meeting with the Senate failed.
After the death of Darius his incomplete will was read out in the Senate and Junus was the most likely successor. In order to prevent another regency and possible instability due to his age, the man's father Marcus Rufus Honorius became Caesar and took on the name Marcus Honorius Caesar Rufus. Junus freely submitted to his father, as the de facto head of the family and to show they were a united clan. He was made co-Caesar, with both father and son being publicly friendly. Lucilla and Marcus worked closely together, they still remained close but there was now a distance between them, but the pair of them were determined to ensure the success and survival of their family. They married in order to ensure greater stability within the Empire. The Augusta turns a blind eye to the love between her husband and his slave, Iris.

She was delighted and shed a tear of joy at the sight of their family being reunited, despite the sad reason why they were able to do so. Junus and Flavia were now considered to be his children once more, not to mention the man acted as a step-father to Livia, Claudia and Tiberius.

Junus was betrothed to Junia, a descendent of Augustus in order to formalise the family's future. Her step-daughter, the legitimate daughter of Claudius was married to Antonius Ercasius Decimedianus. A man who had supported her son Darius and then offered his support to Honorius and Junus.

The woman works with Caesar and his advisors to ensure the Empire is maintained. She has high hopes for the Empire – and for her family.

Marriage to Marcus again

Arruns was already smiling as he approached his great uncle’s study. Though it was winter, the day was fairly mild, and the grand domus in Rome was quite comfortably warm. The young man had found that the cold weather they had from time to time made his twisted bones ache, so he was appreciative of the days when that was not the case. His sliding, halting gait, using crutches, was still agonizingly slow. But he insisted, even in the privacy of their home, that he would get about by himself unless it was completely impossible – such as getting in and out of the bath. It was a lovely thought, that – to have a place where he really felt at home. The huge, luxurious mausoleum like structure that he had grown up in had never felt that way, after his mother had died. But in the year or so now that he had lived with Aulus, that beautiful, kind, old man, Arruns felt like there never could be a place that could feel more like where he belonged. He was eternally and completely grateful to his uncle, and the fact that the two were almost like peas in a pod when it came to both temperament and interests only made his living arrangement that much happier and tranquil.

So it was that Arruns tapped lightly on the half-way open door before pushing it fully open and shuffling in. His smile brightened even more upon seeing that dear old face.

The extra called session in the senate was most informative and rather brief in compassion to an ordinary session in the senate. The Legatus Lupus had gotten what he came for and Caesar had once again proven that the senate was but a mere illusion of a political body of any significance. Gaius who was not at all fond of Caesar’s way of bullying the senate into doing his bidding, had graciously pointed out that Caesar did not control the taxation level for that authority was still in the hands of the senate. A senate consisting of Caesar’s creatures… for shame for shame indeed, thought Gaius as he arrived at Titus’ domus.
The domus was a very beautiful place, Titus and his ancestors had exquisite taste or so at least Gaius though. Titus had probably already arrived, Gaius had deliberately taken things slowly to allow the older man to return to his domus first to make the necessary preparations. Everything else would have been impolite in Gaius’ eyes.

Now there he was standing outside Titus’ villa, as the door opened and a slave showed him into the house. It was just as he remembered it. Gaius had not visited for at least a year if not more.
He was shown into the Triclinum where two divans stood in front of a low table. Upon one lay Titus who got up to greet his guest most in a most heartily way. Gaius returned this with a smile and a friendly greeting and then took a seat on the other divan at the request of his host. Wine was served and some lighter appetisers lay on a silver plate. Gaius sipped the wine lightly and found the taste just as he found Titus’ home; exquisite.

So my friend, how did you find this little senate meeting? An excellent play as always I would say” joked Gaius with a certain amount of irony in his voice, what could one do he thought, other than to laugh in the face of such a miserable situation.
To die knowing that he had accomplished something worthwhile

GENERAL PERSONALITY:

To be fair, there is the Rufus that was . . . and there is now the Rufus who has survived a trial by fire. The Rufus that was, for thirty-seven years, was spoiled, self indulgent and permeated with a great sense of entitlement. He was clever, in a sneaky way, lazy, and unambitious on a day to day basis. But he was an Alexander, and thus he did have ambitions – or perhaps more accurately – dreams, of grandeur. And he had a great deal of resentment, directed mainly at his family, and most specifically at his father and older brother, Quintus. His own inertia, and lack of focus for his nebulous dreams, though, left him to squander his youth in idle fancies about somehow finally getting his due and lording it over the others, while not having to exert himself too much to do so. He wasn’t patient so much as simply unmotivated to come up with any plans, or the energy to put them into action.

Rufus always enjoyed gambling, with money anyway, but was never a huge risk taker by nature – and never with his own health or life. But approximately two and a half years ago, due to a series of life events, Rufus gambled on a much quicker rise to that coveted top – and lost, in a very big way. Fortunate to escape with his life, it would be a story book ending to say he is an older man and a wiser one now - that the Rufus that is far outshines the Rufus that was. But this is definitely not the case - unless one were to consider an increased sense of entitlement, leavened by months of bitterness, anger and disappointment, and thus a resulting increase in his sense of importance and the need for self preservation - as a facet of wisdom. It is true that Rufus has finally grown up. He no longer moves through life so blithely, so blindly. He is a much more wary man, more prone to keeping his own counsel, and quietly observing, gauging, assessing – all those around him. He is far less naïve, far less willing to trust, far more mature and thoughtful. But – the ambition remains. If anything, coupled with a desire for revenge, it has grown.

By necessity, after what happened with Camillus, Rufus has had to toughen up quite a bit to survive his flight and self-imposed exile. The spoiled brat of a younger man was forced to finally become independent – and to learn skills that he had heretofore not needed to employ, as a son of one of the most prominent families of Rome. Well, he wasn’t in Rome any longer, and he had to learn very quickly that the only person who had his back was himself; that throwing your weight around and having temper tantrums didn’t get you far when those around you held absolutely no regard for who you used to be; and that those who claimed to do so were only out for how you could be useful as a back to climb on as they made their own way up (as had always been the case but Rufus had been too thick to see that). Rufus has become a better thinker, quicker to act, more reliable – to himself anyway, a better planner, and highly attuned to taking the measure of the men around him and keeping his guard up. He was never really a stupid man – he just hadn’t been forced to use his brains too much. Well, the past two years have taught him – life is tough – it’s tougher if you are stupid. So, he got smart, real quick.

Now he looks to the future, and how will he repair the trust that was broken. Internally, he smolders. He is frustrated, impatient, and feeling quite emasculated. But he has learned. He must plan, carefully. He must make new alliances – though he will never again trust to others to carry plans forward. He won’t be second fiddle again. No, when the time comes, he will show his family who the most ruthless, ambitious and conniving Alexander truly is. But until then, he will school himself to patience. He will bow and scrape and eat shit if necessary, until the time is right. Outwardly, he is convinced he can play the contrite prodigal, the sadly mistaken and mislead dupe of a wicked man, who can no longer tell any other version of what really happened. He will ask forgiveness, he will play the game, and he will wait . . . but not forever.
Once upon a time, Rufus dressed well. Even in the height of his debauched lifestyle, though his clothes might be stained, torn and unwashed, they were still of fine material and make. Since his flight, Rufus has worn whatever he could get his hands on. Sometimes this was no more than rags. If he had better, it was probably because he stole it. Whether he will return to the lavish lifestyle of a fairly well off patrician is unknown at this point, and very dependent upon what type of life he is willing to create for himself, now that he is back in Rome. For now, it is bitter gall to him that he must look to his brother-in-law, like a dog to its master, for what he does have.
GENERAL APPEARANCE:
Physically, Rufus has undergone as hard a transformation as he has psychologically. Before he fled to the east, Rufus was chunky from lack of exercise and a self indulgent lifestyle – especially from too much wine. Two years of hard living, on the road and out in the elements, having to watch his back every moment, and being forced to learn to defend himself, have hardened his body. He has found that he has a natural ability to bulk up, with muscle instead of fat, when he has enough food in him. His face is leaner and has aged considerably, and he has forgotten to be fussy or fastidious – as it was impossible to be so anyway. So, his hair might be longer, and shaggier – his beard might grow out or he might sport days or a weeks worth of stubble. But his eyes especially have cleared and brightened, and hardened as well. The focus he has always lacked is clearly to be found now within their blue depths.
BIOGRAPHY:

The life of a second son is not an easy one. The life of the second son of a powerful and influential family of Rome can be very difficult. Though on the surface, up until two years ago, it might have appeared that Rufus Alexander had a very easy life indeed, in truth, he suffered, greatly. For Rufus was imbued with a huge sense of entitlement, though with a serious lack of focus. This resulted in a pervasive feeling that he was being done out of something that was rightfully his, but he had no idea how to claim it. Ultimately, this sense of injustice morphed into a growing ambition – to somehow take his rightful place - though an innate laziness, an easily distracted temperament, and a proclivity towards self-indulgence made action more of an abstract concept than something Rufus would actually attempt.

How did such a son of such an illustrious house come into being? Well, as always, it’s easy to blame the parents. In Rufus’ case, there is a morsel of truth in such finger pointing. Rufus was born the second son and third child of Flavius and Annthea Alexander. Right from the start, Annthea had determined to follow Flavius about the empire as he pursued his military career. Their first child, a son, Quintus, was born a year after their marriage. But Flavius and Annthea were apart more than together because of his military duties. She did not conceive again for almost six years, and happily, she looked forward to the birth of her second child. Sadly, however, this baby, a daughter they named Cornelia, was still born. Annthea grieved for her lost child, and three long years passed before a third child was born to them. Overjoyed that this son, Rufus, was healthy and strong, Annthea doted on him. Flavius, of course, was back and forth with his duties, and ten year old Quintus was already well on his way to following in his father’s large footsteps. It was only natural that Annthea clung to this second little boy the gods had seen fit to give to her, and she coddled and babied him in a way she never had with Quintus. Annthea’s attentions to her second son only increased in intensity when two years or so after his birth, a second daughter was born - but died within just a few weeks. Annthea was crushed, and all her motherly love was poured into little Rufus. For better or for worse, by the time Rufus’ twin brother and sister, Julius and Lucilla, were born, the five year old boy was spoiled rotten. The belief that the sun and moon revolved around him and his needs and wants was thoroughly, irrevocably engrained in him, and he was wildly jealous of the attention his mother showed the new babies. Flavius, when he was around, barely took note of Rufus, other than to chastise him for being such a whiner. Annthea felt bound as his mother to jump to his defense, and so began a cycle that would last for two decades. Other sons came along, Dessius, Octavis and Laelius – and though Annthea continued to favor Rufus, and tried to protect him from his father’s contempt, she was of course kept busy by Rufus’ five younger siblings. Rufus, as he grew, was very conflicted, feeling both a great love for his mother, whom he had had to himself for the first five years of his life, and also resenting her for both “deserting him” and for babying him – for he could see how negatively his father, and Quintus, felt about him.

Eventually, at the age where typically little boys find a need to separate themselves from their mothers, Rufus finally became less clingy and was more willing to leave Annthea and play or study. But he always returned to her for solace for his little wounds, comfort for perceived wrongs, and companionship when he grew tired and cranky. They remained very, very close – too close perhaps. For her attention fostered in his young mind that somehow he was more special than his brothers and sisters. As he grew to a young boy, he came to realize what his place in the family was, in reality – as compared to the way he saw it based on the way his mother favored him. At first, he was puzzled. Then he was resentful. It seemed so grossly unfair that his older brother, and not him, would be the leader of the family once their father was gone. As a boy, and then as a youth, he continued to turn to Annthea for comfort and reinforcement of his importance in the grand scheme of things. He felt reassured for the most part. He was still her favorite. How bad could things get?

In due course, however, doting mother or no, Flavius insisted that all his children receive a rather stern, conventional Roman education and training, including military training for all of his sons. Rufus by this time, around the age of nine, was unenthusiastic and gave a relatively lackluster performance. He was inherently lazy, and sneaky, and found many ways to get out of what he was supposed to be doing. Again, when he got caught and called on the carpet for his slackness, Annthea jumped to his defense, sometimes successfully, sometimes not. If Flavius was involved in any way, he had no compunction about literally whipping Rufus into behaving and conforming. Rufus, of course, then developed in intense hatred of his father. He learned early on to manipulate his mother and try to set the two against one another, though this sometimes backfired. All in all, Rufus somehow managed to muddle through his lessons and his physical and martial training, never as good as Quintus, and even when they came along after him, not even as good as his younger brothers. He pretty much mooched about, feeling sorry for himself, and harboring burning resentments against each and every one of his family.

Except perhaps Lucilla.

As children, Rufus had mostly ignored his sister. Five years his junior, as a little boy he had no use for a tiny girl trailing along after him. And she had Julius, and apparently wasn’t overly interested in cultivating any closeness with her older brother. In fact, when she and Julius had reached their young childhood years, they actually took to teasing their older brother, sometimes mercilessly, and sometimes even resorting to physically tormenting him. However, approaching his teen years, Rufus began to appreciate his sister more. She was clever, and had an edge of hardness about her even then. He found her a useful ally, in planning various schemes for avoiding what he should have been doing. Eventually, Lucilla became aware that Rufus was trying to thwart their father’s instructions, and she refused to “play” with him any more, not like that. But Rufus continued to watch her, to keep track of her movements – he seemed quite obsessed with her. As Lucilla matured into her own adolescence, Rufus might easily have dome something about that obsession, or tried to anyway. But at the age of thirteen, his sister was married off, and he had little contact with her after that, other than at family gatherings. Lack of daily proximity, though, did nothing to lessen the intense feelings he had when he did get the chance to be around Lucilla. Nor did it put an end to the fantasies he indulged in when they were apart. Sister or no, the bizarre thoughts he could come up with about her would have made even the most hardcore fetishists blink, if not blush. And time did nothing to diminish this extremely non-fraternal fixation he had for her, through three marriages and three children.

But, by the time Lucilla married, Rufus himself was already started on his military career, having been appointed as a Counternubialis to the same legion that the up and coming Camillus had been given, in Gaul. This was in the year 42. Rufus was 23. Again, his prediliction for slacking off and chasing after both women and other young men did not earn him any accolades, despite his family’s illustrious military reputation. His tasks were mainly confined to administrative duties, and he was not active in any real campaigning or anything very dangerous. And that was exactly how he liked it. Somehow, he managed to put in his five years, and returned to Rome, his military duty done. As much for the sake of preserving the family’s reputation as for the intercession of Anthea on Rufus’ behalf, Flavius agreed that his second son, who was such an irritating puzzle to him, should remain in Rome, indefinitely.

Indefinitely stretched out quite a bit. For the better part of a decade, Rufus did little with his life other than indulge his vices as best his purse would allow him. He had no source of income of his own, so he borrowed constantly from his mother. His siblings were off doing their own thing, except for Octavius and Laelius, who were barely more than toddlers. For the most part, Rufus enjoyed his rather debauched lifestyle. But part of him still smoldered with some feeling of unrest, stemming from that sense that he was ignored, overlooked and somehow not receiving his due. When his sister divorced her second husband and married the emperor Cluadius, Rufus had a momentary flash of zeal, to pursue his hazy dreams of being “somebody.” But as always, his instinct had no direction, no focus, and so he quickly fell back into his normal state of drinking, gambling and whoring about. His family, for the most part, did their best to ignore him. Their expectations for him were non-existent – and he entirely lived down to that standard. His father had by this time retired from the military and joined the Senate. As far as Flavius was concerned, never seeing his second son was often enough for his liking. Rufus pretty much reciprocated that sentiment.

There had been another flash in the pan, as far as Rufus’ ambitions were concerned. Before Lucilla’s marriage to Cluadius, Rufus’ old legate and friend, Camillus made some overtures to the Alexandrii son – something about cementing an alliance with a marriage to Lucilla. That all went south somehow – Rufus wasn’t quite clear about all the politics involved as he didn’t pay much attention to that kind of thing. But he remained in contact with Camillus, who really was quite nice to him, as opposed to his own family. Though when he had served under Camillus the two had not been particularly close, now it seemed that Camillus frequently would take Rufus out for dinner and drinking, pay for his whores for the night, and all in all was quite happy to sit and listen to the younger man rant about his horrible family. Rufus could count many men as friends, if he had coins in his purse. But Camillus definitely ranked as very close to the top, maybe number one even, whether he had money on him or not. Camillus was a person in whom Rufus could confide, and always count on to lend a sympathetic ear.

Unsurprisingly, old Claudius kicked the bucket in the summer of 56. Also unsurprisingly, it was soon rumored that he had been poisoned. Rufus had his own ideas of whose lovely yet hard as steel hand might have been behind that little plot. Flavius too had died, and Quintus was now head of the Alexandrii. Rufus was forced to bend the knee to his overbearing, priggish and outright douche bag of a brother. Soon enough, the two came to blows, about a minor misunderstanding over some furniture, and Rufus found himself kicked out of the family home and onto the mean streets of Roma. Who could he turn to? His nephew, newly proclaimed Caesar, wouldn’t give Rufus the time of day, let alone apartments in the palace. His mother wasn’t speaking to him. His loving sister lent him a small sum, on terms. What was he to do? The answer – the only answer – seemed to jump up and smack him in the face. Camillus! Of course, his friend would not turn him away.

Indeed, Camillus welcomed Rufus with open arms, and a surprising proposition. Rumors were flying about the cause of Caesar’s death. Then rumors turned to confirmation – Claudius had indeed been poisoned. But not by his loving wife. No, it was Valentinus who was the assassin, and it was Camillus who pointed the big, fat finger at his longtime friend. Rufus was shocked – it seemed hard to fathom. If anyone had ambitions to the throne, ambitions which had been thwarted time and again, it was . . . Camillus. Sure enough, directly on the heels of this startling epiphany, Camillus put his proposal to Rufus. What might happen, he propounded, if the new Caesar, your nephew, Darius, the little shit who wouldn’t even offer you a place to lay your head of a night, were to succumb to some fatal illness – like, say . . . a knife wound? Rufus had been a little shocked, but tried not to show it. After a good deal of reflection, he decided this was a game far too big for him to play, and he declined, politely, his friend Camillus’ offer to assist in such an endeavor. All well and good, Camillus said. But you’re not leaving here now. Please consider this my invitation to remain with me indefinitely. Rufus unhappily agreed.

Well, Camillus made his attempt, and fortunate for some, unfortunate for others, it failed. On the brink of being accused of the foul deed, Camillus made another proposal to Rufus, the only Alexander left that he could count as ‘friend’. Come with me! Make a stand with me! Show your family for once that you are a man and not a mouse! Fight by my side, and together we will rule once you have seen your brothers eat shit and gag on it! Well . . . it all sounded very grand, but really, was he sure . . . Rufus got no further in his vacillations. Camillus made it quite clear. Rufus was coming with him to Gaul – willingly or not. As an ally – or as a hostage, who just might come in handy if things went badly. It was not a choice. It was not an offer. It was a fact, whether Rufus consented or no. Besides, Camillus reminded him in a helpful way, no-one would ever believe that Rufus had no hand in the attempt on his nephew’s life, not when he was living under Camillus’ wing. In for a penny, in for a pound, hey?

So . . . off they went to Gaul, to rally the troops loyal to the once beloved and successful general. To fight – against Quintus. Rufus almost peed in his pants to think about it – the thought of being in a battle was bad enough. The thought of facing Quintus was terrifying.

Rufus was fortunate the day the two forces met and engaged in the second battle of Alesia. Camillus knew better than to really let the unblooded novice anywhere near the battle lines. And towards the end of the day, the men left to “protect” (i.e guard) Rufus, were attacked and killed. Rufus, for once with Fortuna smiling on him, was able to hide and then sneak off, in the opposite direction from Camillus and as fast as he possibly could go. He never looked back. Soon enough he heard of the disastrous outcome for his ally. It made him flee all the faster, and farther. Eventually, Camillus was taken and later executed. Rufus was on the other side of the mare nostrum by then.

This was almost two years ago. Rufus has been on the run ever since. The tale of his journey would fill a book. Suffice it to say, he has sought shelter and allies in odd places, and failed to find either. He had nothing – was nothing – and could offer nothing, other than his family name. But, a man who is nobody has nowhere to go but up, right? The gods are cruel, or perhaps they just have a very warped sense of humor. They had allowed Rufus to live a half-life as a half-man for thirty-seven years. At an age when most men are beginning to look back at their achievements, Rufus could only look forward, and hope that he survived in exile long enough to achieve something he could one day look back upon. By necessity, he grew up. With no choice, he hardened, and grew, and finally – finally – became the man he never had been. Not a good man. Not a contrite man, nor a humbled man. If anything, his ordeal has brought out a beast within, though he is careful to keep it hidden. Like at least some of his siblings, Rufus has discovered the iron core within that is an Alexandrii, and he is prepared to bring focus, direction and purpose to his once clouded vision of who he is and what he wants.

And that core of resolve, it turns out, came at a very needed moment, for events were about to sweep Rufus right back to the cradle of his birth – Rome. With the capture and interrogation in the summer of 58 A.D. of a certain spy, a musician by the name of Philomelus, it became clear to the current emperor, Rufus’ once again brother-in-law, Marcus Honorius Caesar Rufinus, that Parthia was indeed the probable instigator of the maritime piracy problems that had been plaguing the empire. Caesar, uneasy and more than a little unhappy about this almost confirmation of his suspicions, requested that the Parthian-Armenian prince, Artaxias, reaffirm the terms of the earlier peace treaty between Rome and Parthia. As a gesture of good will, between Armenia and Rome at least, if not Parthia and Rome, Artaxias readily agreed and threw in a bonus. His brother, Tiridates, King of Armenia, had ‘captured’ the renegade traitor Rufus Flavius Alexander. The brothers gladly turned Rufus over to Caesar in acknowledgment of the friendship between Armenia and Rome. So back to Rome Rufus was shipped, a well treated prisoner, until he reached the eternal city, there to await his brother-in-law’s pleasure.

For purely political reasons, Marcus released Rufus shortly after his arrival, granting him a pardon for his traitorous acts. Rufus is free to move about the city, but he isn’t so stupid as to think that Marcus isn’t keeping a close surveillance on him.
